WELCOME
TO EVELYN'S BIOLOGY IN LIFE BLOG

Hello! For those of you who are unfamiliar with me, my name is Evelyn Blackman. And that lovely creature in the picture with me is Joey, my object for photo-proof. This is my biology life blog.

1. Animal with segmented body
This first picture is an ant, and a very small one at best. Ants are great examples of segmented bodies because of their three different parts of their body, connected together into the different pronounced sections. First is the head, by the little antena sticking up. Then, moving upwards in the photo, to the thorax, and then the abdomen.

2. Bilateral symmetry
Say hi again to Joey! This next photo is of a leaf, an example of bilateral symmetry, meaning the leaf can be split evenly vertical-wise down the body, and have both sides be mirror images of each other. If I split the leaf down the middle, each side would have a curve, much like a pear, and a spiny outside.

 3. Eukaryote
This next picture is of a human, obviously. For safety measures, I blocked out his face with Joey, my smiling companion.
Humans are great examples of eukaryotes, because their cells have nuclei, or have mini brain-like things in each cell. Therefore, because this person is a human, he is a eukaryote, or he would not function.

4. Flower ovary
The pink flower , ripped in half, shows it's ovary. I could only get so close, with my camera in focus, so I will tell you that the ovary is right below the yellow smudge in the center of the flower. The ovary is where the flower produces the seed, or it's offspring. The lovely little thing gives us a great example of a flower ovary.

5. Epithelia tissue
Epithelia tissue is, in this instance, the tissue that surrounds the whole human body-- essentially, the top layer of your skin. This picture depicts epithelia tissue because it is a picture of human legs, which are covered in a top layer of skin-- epithelia tissue.

6. Asexual reproduction
Strawberries are a great instance of asexual reproduction, which is defined as being able to reproduce by oneself, without a partner, unlike animals. Strawberries form something called nodes, or structures, with their runners, and the nodes eventually grow roots and other strawberry plants.

 7. GMO-- Genetically Modified Organism
Here, again, is little Joey, smiling up from the middle of an apple, an example of a GMO-- genetically modified organism. GMO's are organisms that have had their genetic sequence changed or altered by man, to make them more appealing, or to reproduce better, or to grow faster-- whatever it may be. Apples have been modified many times to make whatever the producer thinks would make the apples sell better, including this apple. I know this because it was on the packaging.
